Introduction to NFTs and the Metaverse

By Reda A. on May 23, 2025

Updated 31 August 2026. An NFT is a unique token ID on a blockchain that points at metadata (often a file on IPFS or a URL). It is a receipt, not a copyright lawyer in a box. Right-clicking the image does not transfer the token. That distinction mattered in 2021 hype and still matters when someone tries to sell you “digital land” as if it were a deed in the physical world. Reda’s stance: understand the mechanism, assume thin liquidity, do not build a trading identity around floor prices.

Fungible vs not

One bitcoin is meant to be like another. An NFT is one token. Use cases that are real: tickets, game items with actual users, on-chain provenance for a creator’s work. Use cases that were mostly speculation: profile-picture collections with celebrity shills and wash-traded volumes. Always check whether volume is organic. Thin books mean you can be the exit liquidity.

“Metaverse” as marketing

Interoperable 3D worlds with persistent economies are a product vision, not a single network you must buy into. Land NFTs on a specific platform are exposure to that platform’s users, not to “the future of the internet.” If the client shuts down, your token may still exist and still have no buyers. Interoperability slogans have lagged reality: skins rarely travel cleanly between games.

How this touches a trader

Treat NFT books like illiquid micro-caps: wide spreads, easy to manipulate, hard to size with a 1% FX-style stop because the “stop” is often no bid. Royalties and marketplace rules change. Phishing “mint” sites steal keys — same hygiene as the wallet guide and scam list.

We are not forecasting a new NFT season. If you collect, collect as you would art or games: money you can lose, official sites only, no leverage. This is not a buy list and not a short list.

What you actually own when you “buy the JPEG”

You own a token on a specific contract on a specific chain. The picture is usually a pointer. If the pointer is a website the team controls, the image can change or vanish while the token still sits in your wallet. If the pointer is IPFS, you still depend on someone pinning the file. Copyright, display rights, and commercial use are legal questions the token does not settle by existing. Celebrity “I own this” posts in 2021 skipped that paragraph. We do not skip it. If you collect, collect the way you would buy a print: because you want it, at a price you can delete, from a marketplace URL you typed yourself.

Hypothetical teaching example, not a call: a profile-picture collection has a “floor” of 2 ETH on a marketplace. Last 24-hour volume is 0.4 ETH and three wallets. That floor is a quote from nobody. You are not looking at EURUSD. You are looking at a thin book. A 1% Forex-style stop does not exist here because there may be no bid when you want out. Treat size as a collectible budget, not as a leveraged ticket.

Wash trading, royalties, and marketplace rule changes

Volume can be the same wallets trading with themselves to paint a chart. Royalties that were “enforced” by a marketplace can disappear when a competing marketplace lists the same contract with 0% fees. Your thesis cannot be “the royalty stream will pay me.” Your thesis, if any, is the object and the community — and even that can empty. Game items with real users are a clearer use case than land in a world with no players. Still: the client can shut down. The token can remain and the market can be zero.

“Metaverse” as a word bundled three things: VR hardware, game economies, and token fundraising. Only the middle one sometimes has users. Interoperability — wear this skin in every world — has lagged the pitch decks. If a pitch needs you to believe in interoperability to justify the price, you are underwriting a product that does not exist yet. That is venture risk, not a chart pattern.

Hygiene is the same as every other crypto surface

Fake mint sites, Discord “mods,” and support DMs steal keys the same way they do for DeFi. Official collection URL, typed. Hardware wallet for anything you would mourn. No seed on a website. Read the wallet guide and scam list before you connect to a mint. We are not forecasting a new NFT season and we are not writing a short list. If you stay away entirely, that is a valid plan. This is education, not investment advice, and not a claim that digital objects are worthless — only that they are easy to confuse with a liquid market.
