How to Spot a Scam in the Crypto World
By Reda A. on May 21, 2025
Updated 31 August 2026. Crypto is global, fast, and hard to reverse. Scammers reuse the same four plays. Reda’s filter: if the pitch requires speed, secrecy, or your seed, it is done. We would rather you miss a “10x” than practice sending ETH to a giveaway bot.
1. Guaranteed yield
Markets do not pay a locked 3% a day. Bots, “prop desks,” and Telegram managers who need you to deposit to unlock a withdrawal are running a pool until inflows stop. Real trading has losing weeks. Anyone who denies that is not a trader.
2. Phishing and clone apps
Emails and ads clone MetaMask, Ledger, Binance, Uniswap. The URL is off by one character. You type the seed to “verify” and the wallet empties. Protect: type domains, bookmarks, hardware confirmations, no seed on a keyboard attached to a browser. Support will not DM you first in Discord. Our community mods will never ask for keys. See also the wallet setup.
3. Rug pulls
New token, hyped chart, liquidity added, team removes liquidity or dumps on buyers. Red flags: anonymous team with no other reputation, no audit or a fake audit PDF, whitepaper cloned from another project, stealth mint, locked liquidity that is not actually locked. You will not catch all of them. Size as if the token can print zero overnight.
4. Giveaways and impersonation
“Send 1 ETH, get 2 back” is always theft. Verified badges are cheap to fake in bios. Elon, CZ, or a Prototraders clone will not need your first deposit to pay you. Recovery scammers arrive after you are already drained and ask for more.
If it feels urgent, wait. If you already sent funds, we cannot get them back; report to the host platform and your local cyber unit. This article is not legal advice. Stay skeptical of anyone, including us, who starts sounding like a sure thing.
A five-minute checklist before you send anything
- Who is asking — a website you typed, or a DM that arrived after you joined a group?
- What do they need — a transaction you understand, or a seed, a remote-desktop app, or “verification” on a clone URL?
- What is the return story — a market that can go down, or a locked daily percent?
- Can you leave — withdrawals work on a test amount, or is there a fee to unlock that keeps growing?
- Would you still do this tomorrow morning, or only because it is urgent tonight?
If any answer is ugly, stop. Hypothetical teaching case, not a specific accused project: a Telegram admin posts a wallet connect to “claim airdrop.” The site looks like a known brand. The URL is off by two letters. You sign a setApprovalForAll. A week later a forgotten NFT collection you never heard of is emptied. The fix was never “research the whitepaper harder.” The fix was not connecting from a chat link. Bookmark official apps. See the wallet setup.
Romance, job, and pig-butchering variants
A stranger becomes close, then walks you to a “platform” that shows a rising balance you cannot withdraw without more deposits or a tax prepayment. The chart is a cartoon. The customer-success voice is the same pool. We will not coach you through recovering that money; we will tell you it is designed so that hope is the product. Job offers that pay in crypto after you buy equipment from their vendor are the same family. If Prototraders or a clone ever DMs you a personal “allocation,” it is not us. Our community mods will not ask for keys or for a first deposit to “activate” teaching.
Recovery scammers scrape leak forums and DMs. They already know you lost funds. They ask for a small fee to “file with the exchange” or “talk to a hacker.” That fee is the second loss. Report on the host platform. Talk to a local cyber unit if the amount matters. We are not lawyers and not a tracing firm.
Rugs that look like charts
A token can have a beautiful 15-minute uptrend because the only seller has not sold yet. Locked liquidity that is not locked, mint functions the team kept, and “renounced” contracts that still have a hidden upgrade path are all in the wild. You will not catch every one. Size as if overnight zero is allowed. That is the opposite of a Forex 1% stop on EURUSD, and that is the point — do not import FX risk language onto a contract you cannot read. For on-chain market structure without the sales pitch, see DeFi.
If it feels urgent, wait. If we ever sound like a sure thing, treat that as a bug in our voice, not as a signal. Educational security notes only. Not legal advice. Not investment advice. We cannot reverse a chain.
